Moving Checklist – Knowing What to Do, When!

Moving can be both exciting and stressful, as it marks a new chapter in your life as a homeowner, but also marks the end of another chapter. Luckily, there are several things you can do to make this process easier. Follow this step by step by step moving checklist and you'll be well on your way.

First Things First

Hire a professional moving company. You'd be surprised what a fantastic job most moving companies do. Check around, research, and get references before you book, but movers are trained professionals who often take courses to learn how to better and more safely handle your furniture, electronics, and other personal belongings. The moment you find out you'll be moving, you should book a moving company as they reserve long in advance.

A Few Months Before Moving Day

Well before your moving date, months ahead even, is a great time to go through your house and declutter. Get rid of, donate, or sell old and unused items. If you're looking to earn some extra cash, moving yard sales are often a hit as shoppers know they'll find hidden treasures. Similarly, many donation spots will offer tax receipts for your donations.

Next, make a checklist of all the breakables and items that will need careful packing in your home. For example your computer, television, china, or other important items should be packed carefully and separately. If you have children, you should also now be looking into the school transfer process, as it will be easier to complete in advance. Finally, acquire your moving supplies. Don't be afraid to purchase extra boxes, tape, and packing supplies from a moving company. Proper packing of your belongings will keep them safe and allow the unpacking process to move more smoothly.

The Month Before the Big Move

Start packing! The earlier you start packing the better. Get all of your non-essential items packed early to avoid a late rush. This will also allow you to pack more thoroughly assuring your breakables are safe. As well, this is the time to go to the post office to fill out a change of address form. Once you have informed the postal office of your new address, you will want to inform your cable and phone providers, hydro and utility companies, credit card companies, and doctor and dentist offices.

The Week Before Moving

Confirm all reservations either with the moving company you've hired, or your rentals if you plan to move yourself. As well, set aside what you plan to move yourself. Many people choose to take an overnight bag including a change of clothes, toiletries, and some valuables or personal items you don't want packed in the moving truck.

Moving Day!

If you've prepared correctly, moving day should be simple as you get ready to head to your new home in Chatham-Kent. Be there to meet the moving trucks and movers. Give them a brief explanation of how you've labelled boxes, if you plan to take anything yourself, and then look out. Movers work best without you running through rooms as they carry your heavy and expensive belongings. When it's all said and done you'll be unpacking in your new home in Chatham-Kent.
